At 2140 today the team were paged after report of red flares being sighted around the Inverness area. A search was carried out in the Beauly Firth extending to Fort George in the Inner Moray Firth.
Children were later found by police in the Hilton area of the city deliberately setting off red marine distress flares.
It is illegal for anyone to set off a red distress flare if they are not in any danger situation and this can divert valuable search and rescue assets away from genuine emergencies.
Anyone sighting a red flare at sea of around the coast should always call 999 and ask for COASTGUARD.
